Teaching children how to cook is about far more than preparing food. It helps build independence, encourages healthy eating habits and develops practical life skills that can last a lifetime. That’s why the cookery school Leiths School of Food and Wine has launched a new free cookery programme for Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 pupils, giving primary schools across the UK access to high-quality cooking education.

The Leiths Primary Cookery Programme aims to give children the opportunity to learn essential cooking skills while developing a better understanding of nutrition, food safety and where food comes from. Research carried out during the programme’s development found that more than 75% of primary pupils were not receiving regular cookery lessons, highlighting the need for accessible food education in schools.

The structured curriculum includes lessons across KS1 and KS2, supported by chef-led cook-along videos, lesson plans, worksheets and recipes. The resources are designed so teachers can confidently deliver practical cooking sessions even if they have limited kitchen experience. The full programme includes:

  • A 32-lesson scheme of work across Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2
  • Step-by-step chef-led cook-along videos
  • Detailed lesson plans, PowerPoint slides and worksheets
  • Recipes and shopping lists designed for easy preparation
  • Cross-curricular links to subjects such as maths, science and PSHE
  • Guidance on food safety, preparation and nutrition

Each lesson lasts around 45–50 minutes and can be taught in a standard classroom using simple equipment. Many of the recipes are heat-free for younger pupils, while older children can learn safe cooking techniques and more advanced skills.

Pupils prepare a range of simple and affordable dishes, with ingredients typically costing less than £1 per pupil, such as:

  • Pea, Basil and Tomato bruschetta,
  • Greek Salad Pitta pots,
  • Vegetable Laksa
  • Lime Cheesecake pots

The programme was piloted in 45 schools with more than 4,600 pupils, and feedback from teachers has been extremely positive. Around 82% reported improvements in pupils’ cooking skills, while many also noticed better teamwork, improved ability to follow instructions and a stronger understanding of healthy eating.

Best of all, the programme is completely free for UK state primary schools, helping ensure that every child can develop practical cooking skills and confidence in the kitchen before leaving primary school.
