The importance of Breakfast in School was cited in a survey by the National Education Union in 2019. It highlights how poverty is impacting on education.
Hunger is one of the main concerns found, leading to lack of concentration and poor behaviour.
Thanks to charitties such as Magic Breakfast and Family Action, Breakfast clubs continue to be set up in the hope that this problem can be solved. Last year the National School Breakfast Programme, funded by the Department for Education, aimed to set up clubs at 1,700 schools by March 2020. By January, this had already been achieved with support reaching 1,800 schools.
To celebrate the first year of the National School Breakfast Programme the Year 1 Progress Report: Food for Thought has been released. The report demonstrates the positive impact that providing a free healthy breakfast at school is having on over 280,000 children to date, as well as how the programme is working to bridge the attainment gap.
